The Master

Little is known of the individual known as The Master. He appears to have attended the Prydonian Academy on Gallifrey at the same time as The Doctor. The Master craves power, and has intervened countless times to try and gain it. His ultimate plan is unknown, but he appears to have several short term goals;

  • To gain additional regenerations to indefinitely extend his life
  • To gain temporal power, in particular on Earth
  • To gain revenge on the Time Lords, especially The Doctor

The Master is known to have hypnotic powers, and carries a fatal device called a Tissue Compression Eliminator, which shrinks its target to the size of a small voodoo doll, killing in the process.

The first known attempt by the Master to intervene in time and space was on Earth in the 20th Century, when he allied himself with an alien species called the Nestene Consciousness to invade the planet. It is possible The Master has meddled in time before this, under the guise of the Meddling monk, but this is not confirmed.

The Master was seen on the Hunter Planet, shortly before it's destruction, and was believed to have been infected by the Cheetah People. What effect this may have had on him is unknown, but at several points during the TV movie the Master is seen sporting cat's eyes. This may be an allusion to his cheetah-influenced condition during his previous appearance in Survival.

Doctor Who: The Movie

It was on the planet Skaro that my old enemy the Master was finally put on trial. They say he listened calmly as his list of evil crimes was read and sentence passed. Then he made his last and, I thought, somewhat curious request. He demanded that I, the Doctor, a rival Time Lord, should take his remains back to our home planet, Gallifrey.

The Master's remains are being transported back to Gallifrey by the Seventh Doctor when he manages to escape from the box he was trapped in, and causes the TARDIS to crash in San Francisco on 30th December 1999. He takes the form of a snake then steals the body of the ambulance driver who took the Doctor to hospital after he'd been fatally shot.

The Master wants the Doctor's body as he has used up all of his own regenerations. He wants to force the Doctor to look into the Eye or Harmony, if he does his soul will be destroyed allowing the Master to steal his body. He plans to open the Eye of Harmony in the TARDIS, but that can only be done by a human. He hypnotizes a boy called Chang Lee who opens the Eye, and the Master sees a vision above it that reveals the Doctor to be half-human (this is very controversial amongst some fans so might be better not to mention!)

(other stuff to go here)

After a struggle, the Master is sucked into the open Eye. It is not known whether he has survived.
